About the event

🇺🇸 Dorie Miller Day Celebration

Join us for an uplifting and illuminating celebration of courage, service, and legacy at the Dorie Miller Day Celebration, hosted by Dorie Miller Post 194 and Auxiliary Unit in honor of a true American hero.

Why this matters:

  • Doris “Dorie” Miller was born in Waco, Texas, on October 12, 1919.

  • In 1939, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Mess Attendant Third Class — one of the few ratings open to African Americans at the time.

  • On December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Miller stepped into history. While serving aboard the USS West Virginia (BB-48), he aided in moving wounded sailors to safety, then — despite having no prior training on the weapon — manned a Browning .50-caliber anti-aircraft gun and fired at attacking planes until he ran out of ammunition.
